Why Your Joints Need Daily Movement (Just Like Your Teeth Need Daily Brushing!)

Kirsty Carella | NOV 6, 2025

We all know the drill when it comes to looking after our teeth: you brush them every single day to keep your mouth healthy and to prevent plaque from building up and causing problems down the line.

But have you ever thought about your joints in the same way?

Stay with me because this is where Pilates comes in.

Just like plaque can build up on teeth, stiffness can build up in our joints when we don’t move them regularly. And that stiffness is often what leads to aches, tightness, reduced flexibility and even injury over time, especially if you love running, walking, cycling or playing sports.

Your Joints Are Designed to Move — A Lot More Than You Think

Your body is incredibly clever. Your shoulders and hips are designed to move in six different directions.

Your spine? Four.

But in everyday life, most of us only use a tiny portion of that movement.

Think about it:

  • We sit at desks.

  • We walk in straight lines.

  • We bend forward to pick things up.

  • We rarely twist, rotate or move in circles.

And when joints don’t move through their full range, they start to feel stiff like a door hinge that hasn’t been oiled in a while. Over time, this stiffness can lead to discomfort, reduced mobility and even injury during the activities you love.

This is where regular Pilates comes in.

Movement Is Medicine — Not Just Stretching

In my Pilates classes in Linlithgow, we focus on multi-directional joint movement - rotations, spirals, circles and controlled stretches. This is what keeps joints healthy, lubricated and moving freely.

Imagine your joint is like a sponge. When you move it, you squeeze fresh synovial fluid into the joint, which nourishes and lubricates it. When you don’t move it? The sponge dries out and that’s when stiffness shows up.

Stretching alone gives short-term relief.

Daily joint movement + Pilates-based strength and control = lasting freedom.

What You Can Do Today

If you’ve noticed a “sticky” area recently - a stiff hip, tight shoulders or your back awkward when you try to look over your shoulder - try adding just 1–2 minutes of that movement into your daily routine.

Your joints will thank you.

Your running, walking, tennis swing or general everyday movement will feel easier.

And your body will feel more your own again.

Ready to move better, feel stronger and support long-term injury prevention?

My Beginners Pilates classes in Linlithgow are designed to help active adults move well, stay mobile and enjoy the activities they love without pain or stiffness.
