Why Moving Your Aching Joints Is the Best Medicine

Kirsty Carella | OCT 1, 2025

Ever woken up in the middle of the night with aching joints?

Or found yourself hesitating to bend, twist, or even go for a short run because things just feel a bit too stiff?

I hear this all the time from people who come to my Pilates classes in Linlithgow - and I totally get it.

When your body aches, the instinct is to stop moving altogether. Rest feels safe. But here’s the truth…

👉 That’s the worst thing you can do.

Movement is medicine. Real, powerful medicine.

Your Joints Are Like Sponges

I came across a brilliant analogy recently that I can’t stop sharing with my classes. Think of your joints as sponges.

When you squish a sponge, liquid oozes out. When you move your joints, synovial fluid (your body’s natural joint lubricant) oozes out too - coating and protecting them.

But leave a sponge sitting around untouched, and it dries up. Exactly the same thing happens to your joints. If you don’t move them, they stiffen. If you do move them, they stay nourished, flexible, and pain-free.

Why Pilates Helps

This is where Pilates comes into its own. Every class works your body in a safe, controlled way that:

✅ Mobilises your joints in all the directions they’re designed to move
✅ Builds deep core strength so your back and hips feel supported
✅ Improves flexibility so everyday activities feel easier
✅ Supports recovery from running, sports or even long hours sitting at a desk

Many of my clients have told me that their aching joints feel looser, they’ve got more energy and they’re moving more freely just by showing up regularly to class.

Don’t Be Afraid to Move

So if you’ve been holding back because of stiffness or discomfort, here’s my one tip: don’t be afraid to move your body.

Start small. Gentle stretching, walking, or even a few minutes of Pilates at home can start to “squish that sponge” and get your joints back to feeling alive again.

And if you’d love guidance (and a good laugh along the way), come and join one of my Beginners Pilates classes in Linlithgow. We’ll move together, support each other, and help your body feel younger, stronger, and more flexible - ready for running, sports or just enjoying day-to-day life without the aches.

Your joints don’t need rest. They need movement. And the right kind of movement makes all the difference.
