Thinking of Starting Pilates in the New Year? Here’s Exactly What I’d Do If I Were Beginning Again

Kirsty Carella | JAN 1

If you’ve been thinking about starting Pilates - maybe your back feels tight, your hamstrings feel like guitar strings, or running is starting to feel a bit creaky - you’re absolutely not alone.

A lot of people walk into their first Pilates class in Linlithgow feeling unsure, stiff, or a bit nervous. And honestly? That’s completely normal.

Pilates can look intimidating from the outside:
👉 “Head up.”
👉 “Shoulders down.”
👉 “Lengthen your spine.”
👉 “Engage your core.”
👉 “Breathe.”
👉 “Move your legs… and your arms… and your head…”

And that’s before we even get to moves with names like Swan Dive, Open Leg Rocker, or Boomerang, which sound like they belong in a circus act, not a local Pilates class.

But here’s the truth: Pilates is one of the most accessible, adaptable and empowering forms of movement you can choose, especially if you’re someone who runs, plays sports or wants to feel strong and injury-resistant well into your 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond.

And if I was starting again from scratch, this is exactly what I’d do.

Why I Started Pilates (and Why It Wasn’t Easy)

Years ago, after a perfect storm of stressful and tragic events, my body simply shut down

I developed a chronic-fatigue type illness that left me exhausted for months. Running stopped. Strength training stopped. Even normal life felt heavy.

When I finally had the energy to begin moving again, I didn’t jump into hour-long classes.
I didn’t try complicated routines.
I didn’t try to “bounce back” overnight.

I started with five minutes.
Just 5 minutes.
And I focused on these three things which are the same three things I now teach in every class.

The A-B-C Method I Used to Rebuild My Body

A for Alignment

Getting my joints stacked in the right position so the exercises actually worked.
Good alignment improves posture, reduces pain, and makes every move more effective whether you're stretching, lifting, running or simply trying to sit without feeling stiff.

B for Breathing

Deep belly breathing was my gateway back to strength.
It fires up the deep core muscles we rely on for running, lifting and injury prevention and it calmed the stress that had completely overwhelmed my system.

C for Centering

This is reconnecting with the deep core so your movements become controlled, steady, and safe.
Centering is also the foundation of injury recovery, especially if you feel your back, hips, or knees take more load than they should.

This A-B-C approach helped me rebuild, inch by inch.
My energy improved.
My posture changed.
My muscles woke up.
My confidence came back.

And eventually… those “impossible” Pilates moves started to happen.

If You’re Thinking of Starting Pilates this January…

Most people believe they need the perfect level of flexibility or full confidence or right outfit before they begin.

But here’s what you actually need:

👉 A willingness to try
👉 A body that wants to move (even if it feels stiff or tired)
👉 A guide who keeps things simple

Whether you’re returning to running, getting back into sport or simply wanting to feel good in your body again, Pilates builds:

  • core strength

  • joint mobility

  • better balance

  • more efficient movement

  • resilience to injury

And the best news?
You can absolutely start as a total beginner, even if everything feels tight or fatigued or out of sync after the festive season.

If I Were Starting Again Today…

I’d ignore the fancy moves.
I’d ignore the pressure to “get everything right.”
And I’d start with simple, consistent, doable steps.

Because that’s what truly transforms your body rather than perfection.

Small steps, done consistently, turn into big results.

And if you’re thinking of making Pilates part of your routine in the new year, you’ll be amazed at what your body can do even after just a few weeks.
