Not Naturally Flexible? Neither Am I! And That’s Exactly Why I Teach Pilates
Kirsty Carella | JUN 18, 2025

Here’s something that might surprise you coming from a Pilates instructor…
I’ve never been particularly bendy or flexible.
Not a dancer, nor a gymnast, nor someone who could casually drop into the splits.
In fact, most of my younger years were spent sprint training and running around Linlithgow loch and doing very little actual stretching afterwards. If you’re into running or other sports, I’m willing to bet stretching isn’t always your post-workout priority either!
But here’s what I’ve learned the hard way (and what I now teach in every one of my Pilates classes in Linlithgow):
You can’t thrive in an active lifestyle without adding in the right kind of movement and that means including stretching, joint mobility work and building core strength.
From Runner to Pilates Joint Mobility Specialist
Despite being labelled a “health freak” for my salad-packed lunches (guilty as charged 😅), I don’t come from a traditional Pilates background. What I do come from is a love of sports, learning, and staying active.
So when I started to notice the effects of age i.e the stiffness, the creaky joints, the slow recovery creeping up on me, I knew I had to try a different approach.
Discovering Pilates transformed how I felt in my body. I no longer felt restricted by tightness or held back by aches. I studied, qualified as a Pilates instructor, and then specialised further to become a certified FRC® Joint Mobility Specialist.
Now, I help others do the same
The ABC Approach to Pilates
Every Pilates class I teach is based on three core principles:
A for Alignment
We position the body to stack your joints properly. This improves the quality of your movement, reduces strain, and prevents injury which is essential for runners, sporty types, or just anyone feeling stiff after a long day at a desk.
B for Breathing
Breathwork might sound simple, but most of us are shallow breathing into our upper chest and shoulders. I teach deep, expansive belly breathing that relaxes the body, relieves tension, and supports your posture.
C for Centering
This is your core: not just your abs, but your whole torso working as a unit. By strengthening your core, we create stability for every other movement you do - from lifting shopping bags to running up a hill.
These three Pilates principles support everything we do in class but I don’t stop there. I also weave in science-backed Joint Mobility Training to help your joints move in every direction they were designed to, making them more functional, less stiff, and more resilient over time.
Why Pilates Is a Game-Changer for Runners & Active Adults
Whether you’re a weekend walker, an amateur cyclist, a gym regular or someone who loves to run (but hates the stretching part), Pilates is the perfect complement to your lifestyle.
It’s low-impact yet powerful.
It builds flexibility without forcing you into contortionist shapes.
It strengthens your body from the inside out, so you can keep doing what you love.
Just like this lovely class member:
“I love being part of Kirsty’s small group classes! Pilates has made all the difference to my running and cycling – and the support and friendship of Kirsty and everyone in the class means the world.”
That sense of connection is also what makes Vitality Pilates by Kirsty so much more than just exercise.
We Move Better Together
I know that adding something new to your routine can feel intimidating, especially if you’ve been out of practice or feel like you should be more flexible to even try.
You don’t. You just have to start.
My Pilates classes in Linlithgow are small, welcoming, and designed for real people. Whether you’re returning to movement, trying to prevent injury, or just want to feel looser and stronger day-to-day, you’re so welcome here.
If you’re ready to improve your stretching, flexibility, and overall movement for everyday life, sports, and running, then I’d love to see you on the mat soon.
