How Pilates Can Help You Stay Strong, Stable, and Safe - Even in Life’s Unexpected Moments

Kirsty Carella | AUG 20, 2025

During the school holidays, I got a huge fright. It was another rainy day (surprise, surprise in Scotland!) and we were at an outdoor adventure playground. I was following my daughter up a wooden climbing frame when - at the top -I completely misjudged the height of the bar. I banged my head, lost my footing and fell backwards about six feet off the climbing frame.

Thankfully, I landed squarely on both feet, unhurt but more than a little shaken.

But in that moment, I was reminded exactly why I do Pilates every week.

Why Falls Can Be So Dangerous

Falls - even small ones, like tripping on a curb - can have a huge impact on your health later in life.

They’re one of the biggest risk factors for broken hips or wrists, which can lead to a loss of independence and a much faster decline in overall health. In fact, falls are the second leading cause of unintentional injury deaths worldwide.

That’s the scary part. But the good news? You can do a lot to protect yourself.

How Pilates Helps Prevent Injuries From Falls

In my Pilates classes in Linlithgow, we focus on building a strong core and moving your joints in safe, controlled ways. That strong foundation doesn’t just make you feel fitter - it gives your body the strength and stability to cope with unexpected situations, like catching yourself when you trip or landing safely if you fall.

Pilates improves:

  • Core stability – so you can react quickly and support your spine during sudden movements.

  • Joint mobility – so your body moves naturally through its full range, reducing strain.

  • Balance – so you’re less likely to fall in the first place.

  • Flexibility – so your muscles and joints work together more efficiently.

Whether you love running, sports, or simply want to move through everyday life without fear of injury, Pilates is one of the most effective ways to keep your body strong and resilient.
