How Did Those January New Year Resolutions Go? (And Why It’s OK If They Slipped)
Kirsty Carella | FEB 5
Be honest… how did your January new year fitness resolutions go?
If you’re still smashing them – amazing!
If you missed a week (or never quite got started) then, you know what, you’re completely normal!
And here’s something you might not expect a Pilates instructor to say…
It really doesn’t matter.
January has this strange pressure attached to it. It's all new year, new you, all or nothing, go hard or go home.
But when you actually stop and look outside, nature is doing the exact opposite.
Winter isn’t a season for pushing.
It’s a season for slowing down, resting and conserving energy - almost like a big collective hibernation.
So if your motivation feels lower right now, that’s not laziness… that’s biology.
Winter Isn’t the Time to Punish Your Body
Think of January like a lazy Sunday.
A slower start.
A warm drink.
A gentle walk.
Early night energy.
It’s certainly not bootcamp energy and that is exactly why my Pilates classes in Linlithgow feel a little different at this time of year.
Movement in winter should feel supportive so instead of intense, sweaty, “go harder” workouts, we focus on:
gentle strength
mobility
breathing
stretching
improving flexibility
reconnecting with your core
And you leave feeling better than when you arrived, not wiped out.
Why Gentle Pilates Still Makes a Big Difference
Here’s the bit most people miss…
You don’t need to train harder to see results.
Often, you just need to move more consistently and more intelligently.
When you build steady core strength, improve joint mobility and work on flexibility, everything else gets easier.
Running feels lighter.
Sports feel smoother.
Recovery feels quicker.
Those little niggles calm down.
It’s the kind of strength that helps with injury prevention, not the kind that leaves you sore for three days.
And sometimes even one class a week is enough to feel that shift.
Especially during winter.
Honestly? Anything you do right now is a bonus.
Spring Energy Starts Now
Even though winter is slower, this is still the perfect time to quietly lay the foundations.
Because when spring arrives and you want to:
run more
get back into sports
walk further
feel stronger and more energised
…you’ll already have the strength and stability in place.
No crash fitness plan required.
Just steady progress.
