C is for Core: Why Your Core Is the Boss of Every Movement
Kirsty Carella | JUL 9, 2025
If you’ve been to any of my Pilates classes in Linlithgow, you’ve probably heard me mention the Pilates ABC - Alignment, Breathing and Core.
These three guiding principles underpin everything we do in class, whether you’re working on your flexibility, posture or strength. We’ve already learned about A for Alignment (how we position the body) and B for Breathing (how breath supports and powers movement), so now let’s talk about C for Core - the boss of your body’s movement hierarchy!
What Is the Core, Really?
When we talk about the core in Pilates, we’re not just referring to your “abs.” Your core includes your entire torso - imagine your arms and legs chopped off (as gruesome as that sounds!) - and what’s left is your core: deep abdominal muscles, pelvic floor, spinal stabilisers, diaphragm and lower back muscles.
It’s the foundation of every movement. Whether you’re walking, lifting, running, stretching or playing sports, your core should be calling the shots. When it does, the rest of your body - especially your joints - works more efficiently, with less stress and strain.
Why Core Strength Matters for Everyday Life, Sports & Running
A strong core isn’t just about looking good - it’s about feeling good. When your core is active and functioning well, you’re more stable, more supported and less likely to rely on your shoulders, knees or hips to do the heavy lifting.
This is essential whether you’re:
Whatever your reason, core strength is your secret weapon.
How We Train the Core in My Pilates Classes
In every Pilates class I teach here, I guide you through simple, effective ways to activate your core. It’s not about crunches or planks for minutes on end. It’s about subtle awareness, alignment and breath.
A little imagination also helps!
Here are some of the cues we use to help you find and feel your core muscles:
These cues help awaken deep core muscles that are often underused, especially if you sit a lot or have experienced back pain or postural fatigue.
Ready to Feel Your Core Come Back to Life?
We work with all these core activation techniques and more in my Pilates classes and whether you're an experienced mover or totally new to Pilates, you’ll be supported at every stage.
So if you want to move better, feel stronger, or simply support your running, cycling, or sports performance with smart, effective core strength work, I’d love to see you at a class. Let’s build a core that powers you through life!
