Back to Basics: Why Alignment Matters in Pilates (and in Life)

Kirsty Carella | JUN 25

Let’s go back to basics, starting with one of the most important Pilates principles: Alignment.

Whether you’re staying active through your favourite activities or just trying to feel more comfortable in your own body, understanding alignment is the first step to real, lasting change in the way you move and the way you feel.

A is for Alignment

Alignment is one of the ABC guiding principles of Pilates - alongside Breathing and Centering - and it’s the first thing we focus on in every single one of the Pilates classes I teach in Linlithgow.

But what does alignment actually mean?

Simply put, alignment is how your bones and joints stack up when you’re standing, sitting, or moving.

And when your body is habitually out of alignment, it can place enormous strain on your joints, especially your hips, knees, shoulders, and spine.

If you’ve ever felt like your joints are constantly aching, even when you’re not doing anything strenuous, misalignment could be playing a big role.

The Role of Alignment in Class

In every class, we begin by aligning the body properly before moving into any exercise. We make sure your joints are in their natural, optimal positions so that every stretch, every movement, and every breath works to support your flexibility, posture, and core strength.

By doing this consistently, your muscles learn to move more efficiently, your joints stay healthier, and your movements—whether it’s lifting your toddler, going for a run, or simply walking up the stairs—feel smoother and stronger.

Why It Matters for Sports and Running

For those of you who love running or play other sports, correct alignment can make a huge difference in how your body performs and recovers. Poor alignment during exercise can lead to tightness, reduced range of motion, and even injury.

But when you align well, your movements become more fluid, your body feels more supported, and you’re less likely to overcompensate with the wrong muscles.

Alignment supports strength, balance, and long-term mobility whether you're training for your next race or just trying to stretch out a stiff back after a long day.

If your goal this year is to move more, feel better, and keep doing the activities you love, start with alignment.

My Pilates classes in Linlithgow aren’t about extreme flexibility or Insta-perfect poses. They’re about real, sustainable movement that helps you stay active, pain-free, and confident in your body.

Come along and feel the difference for yourself.

If you’re ready to improve your alignment and overall movement for everyday life, sports, and running, then I’d love to see you on the mat soon
