B is for Breathing: Why Your Breath Might Be the Missing Link in How You Move and Feel

I always say that Pilates is as easy as ABC — literally!
In my last blog post, we explored A for Alignment and now it’s time to talk about B for Breathing.
It’s a principle that sounds simple but holds incredible power when it comes to improving how you move, how you feel and how you show up for the activities you love.
You might be thinking, “Breathing? But I already do that!”
Of course you do - it’s automatic. But most of us aren’t breathing well.
Modern life, desk jobs, stress and lack of movement all have an impact on the way we breathe. Shallow, chest-based breathing becomes the norm and this can increase tension in your neck and shoulders, reduce core engagement and affect your posture without you even realising it.
The Power of Breath in Pilates
In my Pilates classes in Linlithgow, we always begin with a focus on deep lateral breathing. That means expanding the ribs and filling the belly with air.
This kind of breath work isn't just a warm-up; it’s one of the very foundations of Pilates. It helps us connect mind to body, calm the nervous system and engage and support the muscles that maintain good posture and alignment.
This is especially important for anyone dealing with tight muscles, low back discomfort or just general stiffness – all common complaints whether you're running, playing sports or just spending too long at a desk!
When we breathe well, we move better.
Breath acts like a rhythm for each exercise and helps you flow more naturally from one position to the next. It also unlocks flexibility and allows your body to stretch more effectively by reducing tension.
And if you’re a runner or someone who loves their weekly dose of sports, focusing on the breath can be a game-changer. It boosts endurance, supports core strength and makes recovery more efficient. Think of it as your built-in performance enhancer.
Why Breath + Movement Matters
By combining breath with movement in Pilates, we’re training your body to move with greater awareness and control. This can improve posture, reduce pain, and help you feel more energised, not just during class but also in everyday life. It’s something we work on consistently in class because it has such a big ripple effect.
